12 Months: The Exciting Changes Before Your Baby Is 1
The months between 10 and 12 months can feel incredibly special for parents. Your baby is no longer just observing the world from your arms or the playmat. They are now determined to explore everything around them.
This stage often comes with big changes. Babies become more mobile, more curious, and much more expressive. As your little one approaches their first birthday, you may start noticing new skills appearing almost every week.
I remember this stage so clearly with my firstborn. One day he was quietly pulling himself up while holding onto the couch, and before I knew it he was carefully moving along the furniture like a tiny explorer.

Physical development and growing independence
During this stage, babies continue to grow steadily, although growth may slow slightly compared to earlier months. Most babies are gaining weight gradually and continuing to grow taller as they move closer to their first birthday.
What parents notice the most, however, is the increase in movement. Some babies may even attempt their first independent steps during this time, while others are perfectly happy crawling quickly around the house. Both are completely normal.
Small hands learning important skills
Another exciting development between 10 and 12 months is improved hand coordination. Babies begin mastering the ability to pick up small objects using their thumb and forefinger.
With this new skill, babies can start feeding themselves small pieces of food, picking up tiny toys, and exploring objects with more precision. You may also notice your baby enjoying activities like banging toys together, dropping objects repeatedly, or turning pages in board books.
Communication and early words
Around this age, babies begin experimenting more with sounds and early communication. Many babies start using simple words such as mama or dada and may begin associating them with the correct person.
These small gestures are powerful steps toward language development. Talking to your baby throughout the day can make a big difference. Simple conversations, reading books together, and singing songs all help babies learn new sounds and words.

Emotional development and stronger attachment
As babies approach their first birthday, their emotional awareness becomes stronger. They begin to understand familiar routines and relationships, and many babies become very attached to their parents or primary caregivers.
Some babies develop separation anxiety during this stage. This means they may cry when a parent leaves the room or when they are handed to someone unfamiliar. While it can feel difficult in the moment, this behavior actually shows that your baby is forming healthy emotional bonds.
Feeding progress and exploring new foods
By 10 to 12 months, many babies are enjoying a wider variety of solid foods and becoming more interested in family meals. Finger foods become especially popular because babies can practice feeding themselves. Breast milk or formula usually remains an important part of your baby’s diet during this stage, but solids begin playing a bigger role as well.
As exciting as it is to introduce new foods, there are still a few things to avoid before your baby turns one.
A gentle reminder for mom
As a mom, I’ve learned that patience and encouragement go a long way during this stage. Your baby is learning something new every single day, even if it doesn’t always feel obvious. Enjoy these final months before the first birthday. They are filled with discovery, growth, and many beautiful moments you will always remember.
